“Icarus Wing” in: "Due ponti pedonali sul Tevere", Alinea, Rome,1999

The “Icaro’s wing” bridge is the result of a creative collaboration between the firm and engineers at Ove Arup and Partners in response to one of the most popular international competitions held in Italy in recent years.

The idea was developed with the paramount concerns of enhancing user experience and maintaining an awareness of the great social and economic impacts on both side of the river.

Structurally, it introduces a truly innovative structural system, generated by the combination of two known principles: a composite system of curved stiffening cord and connecting struts.

Either end of the bridge, protected at the edges by glazing attached to the structural ribs, is introverted and suitable for resting or for street market and temporary exhibitions. Following the structural diagram, the central portion of the bridge is liberated of any physical and visual constraints, as the ribs continue under the flooring, offering a grand view of the river and the riverside landscape. This is an uncompromising, adventurous declination of the suspended bridge, resulting in a profile that is both structurally clear and formally mysterious.
