The Garden Tower Complex in LinYi, Shandong province, is the result of a visionary developer with a reputation for unconventional thinking, the exceptional site location, and the radical reinvention of the high-rise typology.
The project challenges the conventional hierarchy of freestanding volumes supported by a podium in the tradition of modern architecture. Here the podium is spatially articulated to express a new hybrid form of verticality. There is no longer a formal distinction or hierarchy between elements, so that voids within the complex flow in a continuum that envelops the users within a vast, interconnected public space.
Within the building, intersecting volumes of comparable size form a variety of configurations and a large range of square footage: loops, lofts, courtyards, and super-floors offer specific conditions to each tenant of the complex.
